Comprising a brass and tinned steel compartmented box, 5” x 2” x 1”. The outside completely of brass. The end opens to reveal its original white clay pipe with simulated woodgrain bowl, in unsmoked condition. The top with a hinged compartment 2/3 its length, the interior skillfully modeled to accommodate the sharing features. The back with a hinged compartment, about ¼ length for tinder and flint. The underside of the lid with an iron rasp to strike the spark. We have identified one other example, dated to 1800 and priced in four figures. Truly a delight!
