Mahdist period, C.1880s. 34” broad blade with four fullers at the forte. Cruciform guard with diamond section quillons and ridged flared langets. Leather wrapped grip and disk form pommel. Shows age with smooth mottled staining to the blade. Guard surface rusted. The grip wrap with two short sections lacking. Type produced for the Anglo-Sudanese War of 1885 when the Mad Mahdi rose against the British to purge Sudan of non-Muslims.
