Mahdist Period, C.1880-5. Large cruciform example said to be styled after the earlier Crusader’s swords and clearly of that form. Some are said to be mounted with Crusader sword blades. This example with fine 37 ¾” blade, triple fullered at the forte with single fuller extending. Both sides decorated overall with Thuluth script. Iron guard and leather covered grip and pommel. The sword of a Dervish officer serving the Mahdi in the jihad against the British and Egyptians, intended to purge the Sudan of non-Muslims and their allies.
