The original belt mount from a Roman legionary’s sword belt, mid to late 4th century AD. While decorative, these mounts were, capable of protectively absorbing the impact of a sword blow. Thus, they are in fact, a form of Roman armor. This example shows surface degradation from burial, likely with its owner. It is bronze about 1 5/8” (1.57”) height with a concentric circle motif and hand stippled borders. Owing to its size, it was attached with four rivets. The silver surface is restored and mounted on an 18” sterling silver neck chain for modern wear. Gift boxed with certificate of authenticity.
