Gilt bronze, just under 1” length, formed as a jewelry box key with conical shank and pierced square bit. At the time (the Imperial Period) the wearing of “treasure box” keys, in the form of key rings or pendants was fashionable. The implication was that the wearer was of such wealth, and thus status, as to own a treasure or jewelry box. In fact, hardly any of the wearers owned such a box. In this example, the bit is simply stylized and not functional.  Professionally refurbished with the 24karat gold overlay restored, on an 18” gilt Sterling silver neck chain for contemporary wear. Jewelry gift boxed with a certificate of authenticity. Delicate form.
