Probably German. Made to about half size with 12” diamond section blade decorated with scrolling foliage both sides. Brass hilt with grip, cross guard/knuckle bow and oval shell guard, all decorated with high relief with boar, deer hounds and hare, all seeming to have a good time. Hilt with some wear. Blade with uniform light tool marks. This was one of a set of samples representing variations available from the maker, undoubtedly from one of the major centers, probably Solingen, which would be carried to the castles, of which there were thousands at the time, to take orders from their noble owners. As well, small town merchants would likely order a few for local clients. As typical for salesman’s samples, it is scaled down to allow for ease of transport and handling with the client. The first we have offered!
