The Gothic poleaxe in its fundamental form as evolved with the evolution of full plate armor. Forged iron 15 ½” length, the left side flat with reinforced shield-shaped eye. The radial and star device on the heel is also found on the German dolorie (wagoner’s axe, see our 97-1040) and the Croatian bardiche, (see our fns9154). Both of which evolved from this form. This is a true axe, made to thrust, hack and parry, distinct from polearms such as halberds which were designed to prod and pull at distance to advantage the foot soldier engaged with a mounted opponent.
