29” oval section blade with gray patina. Gilt brass hilt of superior quality with intricately chased plumed helmet pommel, floral knuckle bow with a portrait to the reverse and shell side guard with the dying lion of Lucerne in high relief. Maker’s name, REISS (Munich) to the top. The diamond inlay to the diced ebony grip is even bevel-edged, a detail very rarely seen. The quillon lacking.  The dying lion commemorates the massacre of Swiss Guards at Tuileries Palace during the French Revolution. The original, sculpted 1820-21, is in Lucerne. This sword was produced within the vivid memory of that tragic event.
