19th century, used in Morocco and Algiers and dating to the 19th century. Demonstrative of the interconnection of the Mediterranean, these were used by Barbary pirates and based on the Corsican vendetta daggers. This example is well crafted with a one piece cow horn hilt wrapped in brass and iron trade wire with 5 ¾” s.e. blade struck with a maker’s mark and decorated with hound’s tooth bands at the forte. Tooled leather covered scabbard slightly shrunk at the throat from age. The Barbary states were part of the Ottoman Empire at the time.
