Roman archers were also proficient with the sling. It was a particularly useful weapon for sieges which were a standard Roman form of attack. The following are Roman lead sling projectiles dating C.300 BC-200 AD, each about 1 1/8” long. They were recovered from a battle site in the Swabian Alps between Stuttgart and Innsbruck and have stable surface oxidation. That area is known for its fierce resistance to Roman occupation and excavations in the past few decades have produced evidence, such as these projectiles, of the horrific military encounters.
