Charlemagne in 768 (founder of the Holy Roman Empire after 800) followed by conquering southern Europe from France to Italy and much of Northern Europe. The condition for peace was acceptance of Christianity, under penalty of death. Conversion was effective and Northern Europeans, primarily Saxons, wore Christian jewelry to profess their Christianity. This ring is size 9 1/2 with 1.4mm rounded face band slightly stepped at the shoulders. The raised bezel is circular, typical for the period. It is inscribed with a bold cross with double border beams with “crutches” at the beam terminals in the fashion of the Jerusalem cross, which would later be embraced by the Crusaders. Professionally refurbished with 24karat gold overlay restored for modern wear.
