Large size, just under 5” diameter on flared foot. The bowl and lid are dark chocolate color inside and out. Each with three family crests, mon, of a circle enclosing a cross. That is the symbol of the horse bit, and the crest for the samurai family, Shimazu. See Mon The Japanese Family Crest, Hawley and Chappelear, p.65. 1” crack to the lacquer surface (not cracked through) on the inside edge of the bowl. Rare example traceable to the Samurai family it served.
