Second half of the 19th century. 18 1/2" blade of elongated leaf shape and deeply offset section alternating forged depressed and raised polished surfaces. Good glossy patina. The iconic carved wood hilt and scabbard of particularly fine quality with mushroom form pommel over deep chip carved lattice segments divided by hound's tooth bands. The scabbard with matching panels and band. Integral tent form belt loop and original hide binding. Deep rich patina throughout. Large superior quality example. After the decline of trans Atlantic slavery, mid century, the Ovambo continued the trade, selling captives for use withing Africa.
