FIRST PERIOD WORCESTER TEA CUP AND SAUCER

C.1770-5, harebell pattern. 3 3/8” and 5 3/8” diameter with cobalt blue and gold decoration. Usual glazing flaws but no damage. Both with the blue crescent mark underglaze. As a result of the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, the display of Scottish national symbols was prohibited by law before 1782. The harebell, also known as the Scottish bluebell was used as a substitute for the traditional thistle, a thinly veiled skirting of that law.
