Based on the Napoleonic pattern or an actual Napoleonic example refurbished after Waterloo. One piece brass hilt with D form guard and ribbed grip. 23 3/8" curved s.e. blade with maker's mark CA at the forte. Spotty gray patina on crisp surface with original cross polish at the forte. Hilt crisp with storage discoloration. Brass mounted leather scabbard, excellent but slightly shrunk as expected. Large numbers of these were captured from the French and refurbished for use in the pre unification Germany principalities. Additionally, numbers were produced to the identical pattern for decades. This example and the following were produced or refurbished from the French about 1850 and the scabbards produced at that time. Distribution was throughout Europe and North America with some used on shipboard and by Confederate troops.
