Standard pattern with figure 8 or double disk guard and lattice ribbed cast iron grip. 29” straight wedge section blade with crowned GR cipher and ordnance mark to the right forte. The back with chiseled CXLIV (144) rack number and makers name HADLEY LEONARD. Thomas Hadley was commissioned to produce 1750 cutlasses of this pattern (Swords for Sea Service, .79) but the name HADLEY LEONARD has not been found in any reference. The grip, and inside of the guard with old gold paint, evidently for display in a provincial museum. Pattern which served against Napoleon in numerous sea battles and in the War of 1812 as well.
