Oval eye forged iron head with a maker’s mark to the left side. This axe accords with two examples illustrated in Swords and Blades of the American Revolution, Neumann. The first, notably, item 1.A is dated 1600-1650, is of similar but plainer form than this and bears a maker’s mark, also the left side, which appears identical to this. The second, (referenced in the description of the first), 83.A, is dated 1600-1700 and is near identical to this. It bears two maker’s marks to the right side, generally similar to the mark on this and 1.A. Most remarkable bout this example is the surviving wood haft, which is clearly a working life original. Total length, 15 ½”.
