Heavy hewing axe used to face off logs into rectangular section beams used for house, barn and fortification construction. See Collector’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution, Neumann, p.27 #13. Iron bit, 8” height and 10 ¾” width, flat one side to produce the flat face of the beam. 27” length with an original haft, though likely replaced in its working life. The butt with a later hanging hole for display. Great character.
