Probably Confederate. Slightly under 17” length of standard configuration with d brass end caps. See Echoes of Glory, Arms and Equipment of the Confederacy, Time-Life, p.226-7 for an identical example. This example is mounted with two field made transverse brass bands, for finger orientation or purchase. The bands are hand cut with slightly irregular edges and of different widths. Wonderful untouched age character.
