Pattern C.1850. Gilt white metal (pewter?) hilt with an eagle on shield guard and spread-winged eagle pommel, shows remnants of silver plate in protected areas. Fine reeded bone grip. 28” double edged blade with German maker’s mark to the forte. Elegant pattern. This example in exceptional preservation with remnants of red pigment to the guard. Grip without the small chips as normally encountered and as made condition.  At the outbreak of the Civil War, the forces of the North and South were both comprised primarily of the state militias. This fine example could have served either side.
