Used by soldiers whose legs were amputated from leg wounds and illustrated in standard references. (Field amputation was the treatment for all limb wounds owing to the inability to fight infection.) Made in two pieces with the arm rest secured to the faceted shaft with a square cut nail. This example of 40 ½” length, for a user of just under five foot height. Civil War production and use, possibly reused later and cut a little, perhaps to service a youngster.
