Late 19th century. Iconic form with man/beast supernatural face below royal headdress. Polished black terracotta, 4 3/8" height. Shows a few small old chips worn over from use. The pipe was central to Cameroon culture, with an oversized version, of this form, carried before the king in processions. The image of the head related to the skull, and ancestor worship which involved preserving the skulls of ancestors.
