Early 20th century. A fine example of this curious weapon which found favor with the Baule of the Ivory Coast after the introduction of tires with pneumatic inner tubes in the late 19th century. These were used both as votives and to hunt small animals. Wood, carved as a woman with fertility attributes. 8 ½” height. Well carved in the style which distinguishes Baule art including the ordered coiffeur. Fine glossy patina and considerable evidence of use. The Baule practiced slavery and evidently still do.
