This example represents one of the most elegant forms from the evolution of the crossbow. As they were used for hunting, sufficient numbers have survived in good condition for accurate dating and typology. An excellent analogous example from the Wallace Collection (A.1046) is best illustrated in Edged Weapons, Wilkinson, Fig.115. The stock is intricately carved with a variety of details utilized on 16th century Italian furniture and presents a beautiful example of what has become know to collectors as Venetian patina. Overall length: 42 1/2".
