5 3/16" length. Forged iron with barbed point and open seam socket. The center with heavy lead wrap forming a jacket. Iron crisp with dark patina and minimal rusting. The lead with white/brown surface oxidation from centuries of burial. Legionaries were equipped with five plumbatas stored in a pouch in their shields. They were thrown before a battle by the wood stem (now perished) penetrating armor at a great distance and desciminating the ranks of an adversary before engagement. Surviving examples are very rare and this ranks among the best for quality and condition. Museum worthy.
