Late 19th century. For the Knights of Pythias, founded during the Civil War to provide the aid and support of the organization to its individual members. Financial aid, moral support, and intervention were provided to members and their widows. Interestingly, before 1875, maimed veterans were not qualified to join, perhaps to keep the ranks fit to serve the goals of the society. The blade with plating over old rubbed decoration suggesting an extended service life. Probably refurbished for the son of its original owner
