This sword is patterned after the European hunting swords which were imported for personal use in Colonial America. Distinguishing characteristics are the heavier proportions of the hilt and mounts, and the copper, rather than brass wire hilt wrap of which only remnants remain.  Also, the 22 1/2” blade is unfullered hand-hammered wrought iron, devoid of the presumptuous hunting motifs (as only the aristocracy was privileged to hunt) favored in Europe. A locally made sword of a middle-class man, likely a merchant for protection in the streets which surely was pressed into service during the Revolution
