Iron head with diamond-shaped fore spike and symmetrical deeply cusped axe bit on a finely forged socket. The back with a double spike emulating the bit. Two crisp maker’s marks to the right cheek. Long cheek straps and beveled edge wood shaft, slightly warped. The end of the 16th century marked the decline of the halberd as an infantry weapon. The armor had become heavier and firearms more effective and widely used. The deeply cusped axe blade is typical. The forward curved back spike became popular during the period and is typical of halberds from Solothurn. Within a few decades, it had become decorative and was often incorporated on examples into the mid 18th century. Overall length, 92 ¾”.
