Cheek straps are intended to protect the haft from being cut by sword or axe (not simply to secure the iron to wood) and this arrangement favors a right handed user presenting the right side to an adversary. Top and bottom straps, both of shorter length, consistent with that use. Quite crisp with some raised oxidation and old museum number to the left cheek. The haft slightly warped with the butt showing degradation from contact with a stone floor
