These hook poles were used for timbering and floating handling logs in mill ponds. Called peaveys, they were pressed into service during the Revolution and currently, are often described as a blacksmith made halberds. Like many tools such as fascine knives, they were eminently suited for battle and many served in the revolution. This example is forged iron, 10 1/4" length with tapered square section fore spike, the tip with a spiral twist, a demonstration of whimsy and the blacksmith's skill. Integral back spike. Tapered tang with chisel raised barbs to assure bond with its wood haft. Uniform raised rust texture throughout.
