Comprising an iron pin, 5 ¼” length, skillfully fashioned with a tapered shank. The opposite end with a captive iron ring and peen above to allow hammering into a beam or post without distorting the hole. Purchased in Abbeville, South Carolina about 1965 and reputed to be from the slave market in Charleston. Restraints such as this were used in the slave ships as well to confine slaves below decks to allow clandestine operation and avoid capture by the West African Squadron. Stable fine overall patina. The only such example we have encountered in private hands.
