Late 19th century, Anglo-Zulu Wars period. 2” x 1 5/8” beaded rectangle in checkered pattern identifying the clan. 10 ¾” beaded neckband with bead closure. 19th-century European trade beads on handspun plant fiber cordage. Classic as brought back from the Zulu Wars by a British soldier. The size would indicate a girl of perhaps early teens. The badge identified her as betrothed to a warrior of the clan represented. Purchased Christies London in the 1980s. We haven’t seen any such Zulu beadwork offered since that time.
