RARE SWISS OR GERMAN HALBERD C.1520-40

Iron head with sharply angled axe blade in the late Gothic fashion, pierced with a four lobed "clover." Back swept top fluke notched both sides to catch the sword blade of a mounted adversary. The base of the spike struck with a large lobed terminal symmetrical cross mark. The socket tapering and curving upward toward the back spike. Thick fore spike. 91 1/2" total length. A number of examples of this form, dated at 1500-25 are preserved at Graz. Earliest example in its fully developed for which we have offered.
