Gilt brass hilt with high relief rococo foliage on stipple ground. Considerable gold remaining. 19 ½” straight double fullered blade with weak foliate decoration the first half. Blade quite crisp with mottled gray surface. About ¾ scale, swords such as this were made for the sons of nobles destined for military careers. They were intended to make the carrying of a sword second nature by the time serious military training began at about 10. They were made by the same makers as full-size officer’s swords and to the same standard.
