Gilt bronze with banded edge diamond center with a blue “stone” above five swelled tip radials set at the twelfth points. These are a direct reference to the Pagan Wheel of Fortune, carried on in the Christian period. The concept of the Rota Fortunae, the Wheel of Fortune, dates back millennia with the Roman goddess Fortuna capriciously deciding the fate of men with a spin of her wheel, often sweeping them up to unprecedented new wealth and prosperity. It has proven to be an enduring symbol and concept even through the Christianization of Rome and into the Middle Ages as evidenced by the highly influential works of the late Roman philosopher and statesman Boethius. Its use here is one of many Pagan beliefs which have survived and been blended with Christianity. A fine Medieval piece deeply imbued with historical meaning. Professionally refurbished with the 24karat gold overlay restored on an 18” gilt Sterling silver neck chain for contemporary wear. Gift boxed with a certification of authenticity.
