84 1/8” length. Iron head with crescent axe blade and back fluke opposite. Diamond-section fore spike forged somewhat off center. Integral iron cheek straps. The blade, fluke, and socket decorated both sides with foliage on the pelleted ground (goldschmelz) originally gilt. The haft of unusual ergonomic form with the lower section of two alternating somewhat flattened sections. Evidently meant to facilitate handling, perhaps in parade movements and changing of the guard where the tip would be dropped to the horizontal position and the butt held under the arm. A lethal weapon for hand to hand combat and crowd control. It could well have served in Colonial America. See Arms & Armor in Colonial America, plate 103.
