COLONIAL AMERICAN WET STONE HORN.

Early New England farmers wore heavy canvass or leather trousers which wore better in the stony environment. Lacking pockets, they carried accessories on shoulder straps or attached to belts. In harvest season, they wore belt-mounted horns in which wet stones were kept to sharpen their scythes and sickles. This horn, 9” in length with a hand-forged iron belt clip is such a horn. It has the exact patina found on 18^th century New England powder horns. These undoubtedly were used for a variety of purposes, including drinking from a brook or pond. Once universal, their simplicity has drastically restricted their survival. This is just the second we have had in over 50 years.
