The Bataks of north central Sumatra highlands were fierce warriors who successfully resisted Moro domination and Islamization. They are noted for the elegant form in their art and crafts, most popularly recognized in the architecture of the communal long houses. This item dates to the 18th century, the period of conflict, and reflect the quality and elegance indigenous to Batak crafts. One piece bronze hilt with swelled grip, deep relief floral terminal straight cross guard and ringed dished pommel with minaret terminal. 24" curved triple fullered blade. Original two piece wood scabbard with seven split cane basket weave bands. The tip band lacking. Untouched original condition throughout with some congealed old preservative over speckled gray patina to the blade. Hilt with deep age patina. Scabbard sound with deep rich age color. Rare.
