ASHANTI FIGURAL GOLD WEIGHT, C.1900, ex: Sir Cecil Armitage Collection

Bronze, just under 2" (1.95") length. modeled as a turtle or tortoise in semi defensive posture with head partially withdrawn and legs  close to the shell. The Ashanti were fascinated by turtles because they carried their homes and protection with them and lived longer than men. Made by the lost wax process. These figural weights were integral to the Ashanti culture and later, were exchanged as gifts.
