Classic conversion from an English silver hilted lion head pommel hanger. The hilt modified by removal of the guard and remounting the grip and pommel to take up the space it occupied.  (That remount absolutely of the period as verified by the encrusted peen.) The silver pommel with crack below the chin. Grip worn and chipped but retains its silver band inlay. The broad and narrow fullered blade decorated with sun, moon, stars and spears, is broad and narrow fullered and reduced to 17 1/8” length. As found when collected about 1950-60. Specific to riflemen firing from cover and who could be ferreted out by scouts, after the shot was taken, and attacked.  The weapon needed for the defense was a short sword or large knife for hand-to-hand fighting. Civilian hangers were well suited but the guards inhibited immediate purchase and often, as here, were removed to give immediate access to the grip.
