SUPERB ROMAN RING, C.100-350AD, SIZE 11

Gilt bronze raised edge circular bezel with high relief figure of a crouching rabbit or hare. 3.7mm rounded face band flaring slightly to the shoulders. The figural representation is very realistically executed, reminiscent of the wall murals at Pompei. In Roman mythology, rabbits or hares symbolized fertility, abundance, lust, and vitality. They were closely associated with Venus (the Roman equivalent of Greek Aphrodite), the goddess of love, beauty, and sexuality, as well as her son Eros (Cupid). Probably a man’s ring serving as a signet. Professionally refurbished with the heavy 24karat gold overlay restored. Gift boxed with certificate of authenticity.
