INDOPERSIAN TWO HAND SWORD KHONDA, 18TH CENTURY

Iron hilt of Hindu form with figure eight guard and ridged tapered knuckle bow. Curved back spur for two hand grip. As with the European hand and a half sword, these were used both with one and two hand grips. Iron grip lacks its leather and cloth wrap. Uniform medium brown rusting to the hilt. 33 ¼” double fullered European backsword blade. Such blades were made in Germany and exported world wide. They were mounted to the British 1760 pattern Heavy Cavalry swords, Scottish basket hilts and many other heavy backswords. Because of the English and French presence in India at the time, European blades are commonly found on Indian weapons.
