GOTHIC SWORD BELT HOOK, 15TH CENTURY

Forged iron, 4 1/8” length. Triangular loop pierced with incised line bordered foliage. Tapered hook with faceted baluster medial which engaged the scabbard suspension ring. Foliate form brass capped bun form terminal. See Metropolitan Museum 2010.180.2, online and displayed in Gallery 307, for a near identical example identified as French, 15th century. The quality suggests the accessory served a knight, probably noble, suspending a sword such as our A5986.
