FINE US M.1860 STAFF & FIELD OFFICER’S SWORD

See The American Sword, Peterson #121. Standard pattern carried by Union sergeants in the Civil War. This example dating to the last quarter of the 19th century, the period of Western expansion.  Brass hilt with eagle pommel and guard. Folding left side guard with the spring lock in good order. Floral motif knuckle bow. Spirally fluted ray skin covered grip with twisted wire wrap. 30” double edged diamond section blade decorated first half with panels of foliage, American Eagle, U S and arms splays. The forte marked  THE M C LILLEY & CO COLUMBUS O. The opposite side with bear maker’s mark.  Hilt with near all bright gold. Minor flaking to the left side of the grip. Blade crisp with minor discoloration freckles. Scabbard excellent with no dents and superficial wear to the plating. From the famous Frank Barnyak collection.
