VIKING DOOR LOCK KEY, 9TH-11TH CENTURY AD

Curious configuration in wrought iron, 3 ½” height made to open an iron cased door lock for a house or outbuilding. Flattened bar with a double prong bit on abruptly offset recurved shank. It operated quite like “picking” a lock and is made to overcome one or more internal blocks in the lock case which would foul a straight pick. Once in, it would be maneuvered until the bit engaged the gravity bold sear and lifted, releasing the bolt. The end pierced for a suspension loop or cord. Very rare and the only example of its type we have encountered.
