Surely made by F. W. Widmann of Philadelphia, though unmarked. Displaying the Widmann trademark hilt and decoration to the blade. Identified Widmann swords are known both with a W to the blade base and without. This example is mounted with Widmann hilt type VI and reeded bone grip. That type is characterized by the form of the eagle pommel. An alternate form is identical but for its triangular langets. The 28 3/8” spadroon form blade is decorated both sides and back for 11 ½” with foliage, trophy of arms and crossed flags. A good example representative of its place in the evolution of the eagle hilt.
