Meiji period, C.1880. 4 3/4” diameter. Red body color in and out. Broad foot black lacquered within. Top decorated with foliage, flower, and butterfly. The decoration carved into the lacquer and the gold pigment inset. That technique required extreme skill as the lacquer is but a few thousandths of an inch thick and an overcut would result in revealing the wood core. Excellent throughout the period. True lacquer, not paint, which took weeks to cure during application. Charming.
