Early example which probably served in a Russo-Japanese War of 1904- as well as serving in WWII. Good quality hilt well detailed in deep relief and pierced foliage. About 40% gilt remaining. The back strap with silver mon of the oxalis or sorrel. That mon indicates that the officer was of samurai heritage of the Tadasugu or Himeji family. See Hawley p.29. Wire wrapped black composition grip. 30 ½”. plated blade with “temper line” etched lightly as made, and in original preservative. Scabbard plating worn thin with chocolate patina. Fine aristocratic example.
