Fine example displaying the Viking smith's skill, artistry and sense of humor. Forged iron about 2 3/8” length. Elaborately detailed. Tapered striking bar with monster or dragon head terminal, behind a second on the opposite end of the bar. As the bar was struck smartly with the flint to produce a spark, these figures served to facilitate the grip and anchor the metal on a rock or stump. The curvilinear form is suggestive of the prow of the Viking long warship. Conserved sound excavated condition.
