18th-early 19th century, quite likely California. Small, about 5 ¼” including the integral base. Saint Francis (of Assisi) stands with a flail in his right hand. His left hand supports the baby Jesus clutching a sphere representing the world. Sensitively and characterfully carved and painted. Carved wood with gesso and paint. Removed from a larger and more elaborate work, likely an alter screen. Between 1769 and 1833, 21 Spanish Missions were built in California by Franciscan priests under land grants from the Spanish Crown. The inclusion of Saint Francis among figures on a more comprehensive work, strongly suggests a Franciscan origin. Charming.
